 Famen Monastery

Famen Monastery is located 10 kilometers north of Fufeng County, 110 kilometers east of Xi’an, the capital city of Shaanxi province. With a history of over 1700 years, it is most famous for the enshrined Buddha’s finger relic which is the only one of its kind in the world. According to historical documents, the holy finger bone of Sakyamuni Buddha remained in the world when his body was cremated after his passing into nirvana. The Buddha's relic is admired and worshipped by hundreds of millions of believers all over the world and toured Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Korea where it was worshipped.

A stupa was built to house the Buddha’s relic, and the monastery was built because of this stupa. Originally named King Asoka Monastery, in 625 early in the Tang dynasty (618-907), it was named Famen Monastery. Famen Monastery was an imperial monastery from the Tang dynasty to the Song dynasty (960-1279). During the Tang dynasty, there were several spectacular occasions when the Buddha's relic was escorted to the imperial palace for the emperor's consecration. Thereafter, treasures for worship were sealed in an underground palace under the stupa. Since then these treasures were not seen until 1987 when the provincial government cleared the rubble of the stupa following its collapse in 1981 amid torrential rains. Many other cultural treasures were discovered in the underground palace of the Monastery including Tang dynasty tantric offerings are all noteworthy for their cultural and historic value.

Out of compassion and responsibility, the Famen Monastery is devoted to charitable activities. Donations and Buddhist Blessing Ceremonies have often been organized to relieve the sufferings of the world including floods, the Asian tsunami, the earthquake disaster and many other misfortunes.
